Design is NOT just aesthetics

Published on February 5, 2025

“You’re a designer, you know how to make things beautiful.”

“You, as a designer, what color looks better?”

“Can you make this look better?”

If you work in design, you’ve probably heard phrases like these more than once. And if not, maybe you’ve said them yourself at some point.

I, myself, for a long time, thought that design was just about aesthetics. In class projects, I was always the one in charge of adding that “final touch” that made everything look more attractive, and that’s why I started studying design. But what I discovered was much more interesting and powerful.

What Is Design Really?

Design is a discipline based on creating products, services, or processes —whether physical or digital— that solve people’s problems or needs. The result of a design is not just something beautiful; it’s something that works, has a purpose, and adds value. Designing is a structured and strategic process where aesthetics is just the final part.

To make it clearer: when someone creates something thinking about their own tastes and preferences, we’re talking about art. When a designer works, they do so thinking about who will use it: what they need, what they like, and how to improve their life a little bit. And I won’t lie to you, sometimes you create things that you don’t love, but are perfect for your audience, because your users might have different tastes, cultures, or ages than yours, and what matters is what they think.

Design as a Strategic Tool

Moreover, design is not just about creating new products. With design thinking, we can solve problems creatively, be innovative, and do things differently. It’s a strategic tool that can make a difference in any company. From improving processes to transforming the work environment, design can generate innovative solutions in any area.

Who wouldn’t want their company to be more efficient and better meet customer expectations while reducing costs? Design can help you achieve all of that.
